Resilience and Social Media
Posted on 23. Jun, 2010 by Douglas Richardson in Social Media, Tribe Syndication
Resilient: an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change. Now those are words to live by! I have been reflecting on my Social Media and Tribe Syndication career for the last several days, sometimes it seems like I am going NO Where! I am taking action; I am Syndicating my Tribe members content; I am adding to my Tweeter followers; I am making new friends and relationships on FaceBook, and I am trying to recruit in to my primary business. I am spending several hours a week learning from the people that are successful in this industry. But as I look at my current position I am not seeing much positive results? No one can relate to that I bet?
I was on a webinar last night and the main speaker made the statement that the Social Media had only been around for just three years. Wow! I thought this is really a relatively new industry, and the monetization portion is even newer. So the industry that we are is just truly beginning! We as relatively new Social Media marketers, I believe if we remain Resilient will be considered pioneers in just a few years. The key I believe is as the definition says “recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change”. I don’t know that misfortune is the correct word here, but learn from our experiences and then make the proper changes.
In today’s economic climate, there are tens of thousands of people looking for a new opportunity. The draw to Social Media I believe is much stronger then it was just a year ago. Now the word is somewhat common place, and for us on the internet that is the word!
One of the allures is that you can start with a computer and internet connection! And I believe this can also be a stumbling block, because people jump in after watching a video or two of the Gurus in this industry and they believe they will be a millionaire in six months?
Now I am not dashing anyone’s hopes here, I am saying that we must be Resilient to the industry that we are in. We must bounce back from the lessons that we learned and continue to move forward with action. Learn from your experiences don’t dwell there, use the situation to make clear and concise decisions, and most of all keep moving forward with action! Don’t become discouraged with your actions, but use the ones that are most effective for you and discard what is not.
Thanks for listening, I feel better already! I just need to follow my own words and try to remain Resilient. If you have ever been in my situation please leave a comment and tell me how you were Resilient to your own situation. Please syndicate this information if you fine this valuable.

Ah Doug,
Do I hear ya on that one! I’m glad you’ve come to the conclusion to keep going. It doesn’t happen overnight and it does take a lot of work to build your brand and get your name out there in front of others.
When you start to doubt yourself, feel you’re going no where, think of this. Imagine your journey into online marketing like climbing a huge mountain. It’s so tall you can’t see the peak.
Stop looking up, trying to see the peak. Life is all about the journey. Look at where you are now. Step out on a ledge of that mountain & see just how far you HAVE traveled thus far. Enjoy the view from this exact moment in time.
You are learning and growing every day. Your journey may be baby steps, yet as long as you are moving, you are advancing! Celebrate every win, no matter how small.
You actually are much farther up that mountain than you think. And the closer you get, the higher it will become to see how dedicated you are to your dreams.
Keep rockin’ Doug! You’re doing great!

Yes, Doug ~ it is so important to be both persistent and resilient. The most important thing I can offer is that it’s not just about the numbers ~ I choose lower #’s of people to follow and go for deeper connections. Cultivating the relationships that feel right and seeing how we can refer business or do business together. It definitely takes some time to set everything up and start those relationships, but once you’re there, the results just fall in to place.
Keep on keepin’ on my friend!

Hi Doug,
One of my favorite lines from the animated film “The Lion King” is when we are first introduced to Scar and he says, “Life’s not fair, is it?” And his little sidekick bird responds, “No, sir, it’s not.” Some days in our journey in online marketing, it seems as if everyone else is having massive success — except for us. And we think, just like Scar did, “Life’s not fair!”
This is not to say, though, that just because we have not yet reached our (money) goals online does not mean we won’t reach them. Resiliency is one of the many qualities anyone with a dream must have to get through the rougher waters. Doing things consistently over time will bring big results! You are doing the right things, Doug, as are we all. Together, our efforts WILL pay off!

Doug,
Your post comes at a good time. I’m not personally feeling this way but lately I have been talking with others that have. I didn’t know that the social media marketing concept was only 3 years old. It seems like it’s been around forever. Sometimes it feels like I’ve been doing it forever
The key to anything in life is consistency and persistence. You may heard the saying “don’t quite before payday”. You never know just how close to payday you are. The next person you meet, visits your blog, or connects on a social site may be the one that changes everything. I always try to remember the words I heard Nick Logan share at a time when I was wondering how much longer before I make some money; “this is a marathon, not a sprint”.

Hello My Very Smart Friend!
You write a mean blog! I always enjoy your posts and your wisdom! Social Media is absolutely my “cup of tea”, but I have experienced much the same thing as you. I realized that I needed to take more specific steps towards building my list. I am working on that now, so I’ll keep you posted!
Resilience! YES!

EVERYBODY knows what you’re talking about, Doug.
You’re never alone out here, Buddy!
I heard some great advice from Mark Hoverson this week. He said to “EMBRACE the contradiction” (emphasis mine).
He was talking about the fact that slow is fast. When you try to make things happen fast, you’re in for some serious disappointment. Take things slow, deliberately, and like Beth Allen (one of my favorites I must admit) said in her above comment, it’s the quality of relationships, NOT THE NUMBER!
Slow down, focus on quality over quantity, be consistent, always envision your success while looking clearly beyond the obstacles, and don’t allow daily distractions to hinder your productivity.
I think this is what resiliency is all about.
We’re all with you, Doug!
